Edinburg Landsharks: 34
vs.
Houston Colts: 18

This years Conference Championship was an exciting action packed game. The Landsharks defeated the Houston Colts Saturday night in Edinburg. The Sharks won 34-18 & have earned a trip to the TUFL State Championship game next Saturday in Praview View, Tx.

After 4 straight trips to the Conference Championship/Final 4 the Sharks
finally come through with the win and earn there 2nd State Championship game appearance in 4 years.

Frank Fuentes hollered to his team late in the night.
“Who’s going to Houston? Raise your hand!”

Art Diaz raised his hand. Marcos Guzman raised his. They all did, did the Edinburg Landsharks, thanks to Saturday’s 34-18 home win over the Texas Colts at Cats Stadium. The Sharks are now 13-0, winners of the conference championship, and will compete at Prairie View this weekend for their second TUFL state title in four seasons.

They are headed to Houston after a spirited victory against an enormous opponent from Houston, a bunch that set numerous records for trash-talking but got whipped by the Valley club fair and square.

The game almost didn’t happen, as a long delay at the onset over an absent referee put the Colts into lawyer mode. The coaches of that squad lobbied for a forfeit as the minutes ticked by, but that didn’t work. They had to play, and the official eventually showed up in the first period.

And it was the first period that established the home side’s dominance as Renato Nunez pitched three scoring balls in the first 15 minutes, including a 55-yarder to Guzman on the team’s second play from scrimmage.

Two possessions later, Guzman got open again for a 58-yard touchdown catch, and it was 14-0, with the visitors crying a river and trying to figure out what was happening.

Though they rallied with a 66-yard TD bomb, the Colts were outclassed by the Sharks, and at the end of the half it was 27-10, Valley.

Not without a few moments of worry, however. But after Texas narrowed the gap to 7 at 14-7, Econ ex Jaime Hinojosa made a huge sack to end the next Colt march, forcing a fumble that Bernie Luna pounced on for a turnover.

Soon, Guzman did it again, getting free for a 10-yard score from Nunez, and then Luna forced a fumble that Randy Johnson recovered, leading to a 28-yard toss from Nunez to Shedrick Dallas.

As they’ve done all season, the Sharks made the plays in the clutch, as all four first-half scores came on third-down plays. Nunez was 10 of 15 in the half and the Shark D limited its opponent to 22 total yards aside from the 66-yard strike.

The second half was about as ugly as it gets, a turnover fest with the ball changing hands twice on one snap due to a Colt interception but a fumble at the end of the play. Edinburg got the better of the deal, as Raymond Fuentes picked off two passes in the half and Brandon Highsmith did too. Highsmith returned the second one 61 yards for a TD to seal the game at 6:23 of the fourth, but there was a fantastic goal-line stand before that told the tale of the night.

With the score still 27-10 in the fourth, the Colts drove for a first down at the Shark 2, but four times, linebacker Sergio Rojas and the D stood their ground. On fourth-and-goal, the Texas QB rolled right but cornerback Mike Folton came up to make a superb open-field tackle and keep the runner out of the end zone, bulldogging him to the green a yard short.

Though the Sharks surrendered a safety on the next play, Folton’s do-or-die effort had kept the athletic but erratic Colts from coming back to within a touchdown.

After Highsmith’s return for six, Texas blocked a field goal for a 75-yard return TD to make it 34-18, but veteran signal-caller Clarence Cruz dusted off the mothballs to come in and direct the team and run out the clock, adding in one of his patented scrambles for a first down in the process.

For the game. Edinburg collected 264 yards and allowed 200. The Sharks gave six turnovers but took eight, and were led by Luna (eight tackles), Mike Martinez (nine) and Rojas (eight, all in the second half.) Hinojosa was on fire early on, with five stops in the first 20 minutes, and two QB pressures.

Coach Joe Ramirez said that when the Sharks watched Colts’ film early in the week, they figured that their speed advantage would come to the fore.

“I knew we could get open, and we did it early,” said Ramirez of the twin bombs to the speedy Guzman that broke the ice off the bat. “Now we are waiting to see who we play for the championship.”

We wish the Houston Colts a safe trip back home & thank them for a great game.

Special thanks to the huge crowd that attended the game, we appreciated your support.

Edinburg Landsharks: 30
vs.
Fort Bend Storm: 14

The Landsharks defeated a tough Ft. Bend Storm team Saturday night in Edinburg. The Sharks won 30-14 & will now face the Texas Colts of Houston who defeated the Brownsville Outlaws 40-7.

Down 7-0 after a quarter, the Sharks battled back, getting a handful of clutch plays from all over the field to defeat Fort Bend Saturday night. The 30-14 victory improved the team record to 12-0 and sent the Landsharks into the TUFL semi-finals this week.

That state semifinal match will be at 7 p.m. on the turf at Cats Stadium, after Edinburg beat back a stiff challenge from the semi-pro Storm, who visited the Valley from the Houston area.

With star receiver Kalani Jaime out for the year with a broken bone in his hand, some of the other cats stepped up, namely veteran “Varsity Joe” Villarreal, who snared a 20-yard touchdown pass from QB Renato Nunez to bring the Sharks to within one early in the second period.

But Fort Bend (7-5) is a squad with size and talent, led by slashing 230-pound quarterback Lance Crisien, who bolted for 120 yards on the night. With the count 7-6 in his favor, he got loose for a 59-yard scamper to six, but the play was nullified by one of 10 penalties on the visitor.

Nunez (16 of 29 for 182 yards) got the Sharks rolling with three first downs to the FB 11. But there they stalled when Villarreal was ruled out of the back of the end zone on what would have been his second TD of the half.

Then came the play of the half, as linebacker Mike Martinez - out most of the season after major surgery - picked off a Crisien ball and rumbled inside the 5.

From there, it became third-and-1, and with his brother Gibby on the side yelling for him to “Move the pile, Joe!” center Joe Ramirez led Nunez across the goal0 on a quick-snap sneak for the 14-7 lead.

Edinburg later gambled on a fake punt that came up short, giving the Storm a chance late in the period from the Shark 48. But Martinez (8 tackles) combined with Jaime Hinojosa (8 also) and Sergio Rojas (nine to pace the defense) to turn the visitor back on a key third-down play.

Fort Bend drove methodically to start the second half, reaching the Edinburg 43, but Rojas chased Crisien down and forced a fumble that cornerback Randy Johnson (seven stops and three passes defensed in his second straight stellar contest) fell on to stop the march.

From there, the Sharks got a nifty third-down catch from Villarreal for a first down and then Nunez lofted a post-pattern aerial to Shedric Dallas, who bounced off two tacklers en route to a 27-yard scoring play at 7:07, giving his unit a 22-7 advantage.

Edinburg benefited from inspired running by Nick Carpenter, who banged for 92 yards on 15 carries, and also got the usual defensive magic from end Bernie Luna, who posted sacks on the next two possessions to give the Sharks momentum.

But the offense, which picked up 298 yards total, fumbled twice and as the fourth period began, the Storm narrowed the gap to 8 at 22-14 on a 55-yard bomb.

If there was one weakness for Fort Bend, it was the official’s flag. The Storm pinned Edinburg deep on the ensuing kickoff but was called for offside, forcing a re-kick. Then they held, but roughed punter Bryon Gonzalez (he had six catches in a fine effort) and later committed an unsportsmanlike penalty to give the Sharks a first down at the 16. Carpenter, who put his head down and pounded oncoming tacklers on his best night of the season, barreled in from the 4 at 5:49 for some breathing room.

The resilient Storm rallied late but suffered two more sacks as the Shark defense, touched for 326 yards, dug in. When Rojas and Co. hauled down Crisien short of the sticks in the waning moments, it was done.

Edinburg looked toward a third-round playoff game against an old nemesis, the Texas Colts, who defeated Brownsville Saturday to advance to the third round. The group is looking to duplicate the state title it won in 2006, and the next comes at home Saturday night.

NOTES: The return game was golden for the Sharks Saturday, as speedy Marco Guzman and Brandon Highsmith gave the team excellent starting field position most of the night. Linebacker Raymond Fuentes continues to contribute; he made seven stops against Fort Bend, as despite giving up some long gains, the defense was very solid when it needed to be.
